This is the story of Catrin Barentsdochter, a young widow that lived in Holland in 1654, she will spend the next two years of her life trying to escape from the ghosts of her past without much success... will you accompany her in her trip?

'Did I feel flattered by his attention? Had I turned down too many potential suitors in the hope of something better? Was I afraid of being a spinster all my days? Or was I in love at that moment?
When he took my hand in his hand and led me outside to a quiet corner of the orchard I didn't protest.'

I have to say I was quite surprised with this book, history books are not my favourite, but this is a sweet story, based on a strong woman who will be someone in a men's world, she will not be submissive or scared to fight for her ideas or freedom, even if it means running away from her loved ones.
I loved how Simone van der Vlugt introduces some of the most famous artists in this book like Rembrandt or J. Vermeer, it was a pleasure!
I don't want to spoil much of the story, but since I started this book I couldn't put it down knowing which was the fate prepared for the poor Catrin. The story was focused in more or less two years of her life, but I can assure that her life will not be easy!
The book talks about the world of pottery, how the precious chinese porcelain was so important in that moment making all the artisans trying to copy it, trying to make something more or less similar, and that's how Catrin with her creative juices made something special and unique and got her inside a world where only men "understands"...
Of course in a book based in 1600 we couldn't escape about talking about the plagues... something that no matter how far you run it will haunt you and your loved ones... Catrin will not escape neither of this ghost, but she will get braver after this fight!
This is a book full of friendship, love and art; is beautifully written and will delight you wherever your read it!
Do you have any skeletons in your closet?
